ABOUT LOW-LEVEL LASER THERAPY
People experiencing issues with hair loss could receive excellent improvements from low-level laser therapy (LLLT), a minimally invasive technique that can treat baldness and thinning hair. Low-level laser therapy repairs and promotes strengthening in the hair follicles for patients who have various types of hair loss, such as hereditary-pattern baldness (androgenic alopecia), alopecia areata, hormone-induced hair loss, or other issues.
Our board-certified doctors use the innovative LaserCap technology to deliver light energy to the scalp and stimulate growth at the cellular level. This process is known as photobiotherapy, and positive effects from this approach include increased blood flow around the hair follicle, induced protein synthesis, and overall growth of follicle size. This treatment does not cause discomfort, so patients concerned about pain are often well-suited for this treatment. At Aesthetic Scalp in Chicago, we can also perform LLLT in conjunction with other hair restoration procedures, like FUE (follicular unit extraction). Contact our office and schedule your private consultation with Dr. Anil Shah or Dr. Sameea Chughtai to learn more about your options.
AM I A CANDIDATE?
Most people experiencing hair loss could benefit from low-level laser therapy. Drs. Shah and Chughtai will conduct a thorough evaluation of your scalp to determine your eligibility for LLLT with the LaserCap. This revolutionary, nonsurgical procedure works well when combined with other treatments to produce comprehensive outcomes. Depending on your unique condition, our board-certified doctors may recommend LLLT by itself or suggest pairing it with other treatments. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not receive LLLT.
HOW IS IT DONE?
We perform low-level laser therapy with the LaserCap, a dome-shaped device that delivers low-level light energy to the scalp. This begins a process known as photobiotherapy, which works to stimulate increased blood flow around the hair follicle, induce protein synthesis, and improve follicle size and strength. Aside from photobiotherapy, the LaserCap also delays the hair follicle phases; this keeps hair healthier for longer amounts of time. After hair follicles have maximized their anagen (growth) phase, they begin to shrink in size and enter the catagen (transitional) phase. The cell nourishment provided by LLLT causes hair follicles in the transitional phase to stay small for a longer period of time. Keeping hair follicles healthy with LLLT prevents them from entering the telogen (rest) phase, in which follicles prepare for eventual shedding. The LaserCap fits inside most hats and is powered by a small belt-clip battery pack, so patients can carry out almost any activity while using the device.
RESULTS AFTER LLLT
Typically, patients will see their fullest results around three months after their LLLT treatment. Around this time, hair loss and shedding should be noticeably reduced, and at six months, the hair will begin to take on a shiny, voluminous appearance. After a year post-treatment, you will experience new hair growth and be able to enjoy your results with touch-up sessions as scheduled by our professionals. The exact timeline of your outcomes can vary somewhat from patient to patient.
