How Does Robotic Hair Transplant Work?

At Aesthetic Scalp, double board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Anil Shah and board-certified physician Dr. Sameea Chughtai are pleased to offer robotic hair transplantation to men and women. We perform follicular unit extraction (FUE) with the advanced ARTAS® Robotic Hair Restoration system. This technology allows us to provide a minimally invasive method for hair restoration surgery compared to traditional techniques. If you have noticed your hair has started to thin and bald spots are forming at the crown of your head, reach out to our office in Chicago, IL to learn more about robotic hair transplantation.

About the ARTAS Robotic Hair system

This breakthrough technology uses two cameras that take a reading every 20 milliseconds to:

  • Detect the exact location of the hair follicles
  • Adjust the angle and depth of the extraction
  • Track every hair root that is harvested
  • Extract full and intact hair follicles for consistent results

Is robotic hair transplant better than FUE?

Robotic hair transplantation with ARTAS technology provides greater precision, accuracy, and consistency, and faster treatment times compared to manual FUE techniques. With FUE alone, each hair is extracted by hand, which can be very tedious and allows more room for error. It's also a lengthy process that is hard on the surgeon and the patient. No one wants to be in surgery for a long time. But, when FUE is combined with robotics, it's a game-changer.

Is robotic hair transplant safe?

Yes. It actually offers better measurements than a manual approach. And, when in the hands of a seasoned professional, like Dr. Shah or Dr. Chughtai, adverse outcomes are unlikely. With a robotic system, results are simply more consistent.

When will my new hair start to grow?

It’s important to know that patients with long hair will need a haircut prior to the procedure. In order to use the robot, the existing hair has to be short. So, if you have long hair, it will have to be trimmed down. When the hairs are moved to the bald area, there is some lag time. Everything heals up and it looks like nothing was transplanted because the roots of the new hairs go into a resting period. But, after about three months, the newly transplanted hair begins to grow. Results are usually more noticeable after about six months and full outcomes are generally seen at 12 months.

What is the best age for hair transplant?

While the minimum age to undergo hair transplant surgery is 18, on average, we recommend that patients wait until they are at least 25 years of age or older. A more mature age ensures that hair loss patterns are fully developed. If you undergo this procedure too early, a secondary procedure may be needed later on to address the new bald spots.

Natural-looking hair transplantation

Are you frustrated by hair loss or want to improve the thickness of your hair? At Aesthetic Scalp, our expert team utilizes the ARTAS Robotic Hair Restoration system for superior hair transplantation. Essentially, what we do is remove the root of the hairs from the back of the head and transplant them to the front of the scalp. Once the hair follicles are planted, they continue to grow for lifelong outcomes. Double board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Anil Shah and board-certified physician Dr. Sameea Chughtai have been performing this procedure for many years with great success.
